PostSubject: Possible Nascar Enduro sooner?   Mon Apr 15, 2013 5:04 pm

Hi all,
After our awesome Nascar racing on Friday nite i had numerous people mention they would like to see a Nascar Enduro sooner and to be honest so would I. So i have come up with an idea that either on one of our non racing weekends or replace a Friday meet with either a Saturday or Sunday Afternoon that i could run a 4 or 5hour Enduro with Nascars but to work properly it has to be planned and teams worked out no less than a week before the race and will be limited to 12 or 18 drivers depending on interest from this post, so no ringins at the last minute once teams are worked out they are final, and by teams decided earlier guys can organize themselves better or practice with the car before racenight. Also all participating cars will be left with me in the week leading up to the event to make sure the cars are all on a level playing field, all cars must also be Scalextric COT cars. Also the cost will be $25 per entrant as $10 will cover the usual Trohpy/Medals but the extra $5 would be to cover the cost of me working on the cars and a Brand new set of MJK rear tyres to run the race with as my homemade tyres probably would struggle to last longer than 3 hours and plus that way nobody has to worry about a bad tyre. Ok now i have had my bit of input it is now up to you guys to make this event go ahead so if you are interested in the idea post here that you are interested and any ideas that you might want to input on this race.

Cheers John

Hi John,
I think a NASCAR endro is a great idea, i am up for it. (certain days permitting).

My Thoughts:
You are right, the last race meet's NASCAR was awesome, 11 drivers with the difference between the fastest and slowest in the heats being 1 sec. It was a hell of a lot of fun.

The most enjoyable part for me was that each of us set our cars up (some had you do it) and the margin between the lap times were so small.

I don't think leaving the cars with you the week before is a good choice. If people want to then that is fine however i takes away the enjoyment and satisfaction that some of us get from setting up our own cars.

If it is parity you are aiming for set rules/recommendations and have everyone present their car for scrutineering the day/night of the race.

Other then that, bring it on, i can't wait.

Nick

I love the idea of this however i will agree with nick in that part aswell. I guess its a risk some of us a prepaired to take but i think if last weeks race has anything to show is that the cars are already on parity. But the fun part of raving is tgat things can go wrong lol.

Sorry guys I'm going to have to agree with John on this one. From the experiences of the previous enduros there always seems to be issues with peoples cars on the night. I am aware this is part the enduro scenario but so is scrutineering, it would also be good to start an enduro knowing that all cars are of the same calibre and stand a better chance of finishing the race with little chance of mechanical failure unless damaged due crashes.
Some of you may remember we did a similar thing as this with last years GT enduro and made the racing a little more interesting it also enables the less confident drivers to drive a car where they can focus on driving instead of trying to understand a car that may not handle or has mechanical issues and then try to drive also.
You must also understand that John is giving up his own time to help improve your chances of a better finish in the enduro.

Just remember you are not the only one driving you have a team mate, the more user friendly your car is the stronger your team will be.

Just my opinion take it leave it but be offended by it it's not my intention. Very Happy

Thanks guys Trent

Thanks for the input guys, and yes i probably should have pointed out the only reason for me to tune the cars was to mainly check for wire defects and the other thing was to have an enduro with 6 cars exactly the same and yes Luis you are right about one thing i probably wont have to do too much to the cars as most are already flying and equal but one of the thing i want to elimate is me spending most of the race out the back working on others cars so i will be checking all cars for any pre race defects, while yes some of the guys are capable of repairing their own cars but that is only a few, but this enduro i want to race and not have the hassle that i did at the last one where when i was not driving i was repairing cars. I also had a large number of requests aswell at the end of the last enduro for me to go over the cars for the next enduro to make sure we have a closer event. In the end i am not going to force people to give me their cars, Trent found out at the GT enduro last Year that not giving me the car the week before the race was very costly to him and his teammate as the 5 cars i setup were within 0.1 of a second of each other and the 5 cars went from start to finish without a hitch but Trent spent most of his night trying to get his car to work and basically was not in contention from the start. The whole idea of this enduro is to try and create one that is a close as possible and not have guys complaining that they cant handle their teammates car because they set theirs up differently

I could also look at doing it not next racemeet but the one after, and i know that is the meet that we are supose to run F1's for the first time but if i am to do it on a normal racemeet night it would work out the best as a GT enduro is booked in for not long after but teams would have to be worked out at the next racemeet to give them 2 weeks to plan/practice if they want to but if we want a longer race i would have to start the enduro race at 6.30 to get a 4 hour one to finish by 10.30pm and this enduro there will be no qualifying races just a straight out enduro, and pick grid positions out of a hat. Doing all this will also give an extra 2 weeks to organize their F1's. This is only just an idea though as i would still do it on a Sat/Sun arvo if requested

Bring it on!!!

I understand there are a number of competing interests here. Some people like to prepare and race their own cars. Some people prefer a different set-up to others. We also want to achieve some parity between cars and finally we want a high level of reliability. And finally we want teams which are fairly even.

Let's take parity out of the discussion for Nascars. I think last meet allows us to do this

If we start by thinking about teams, we immediately have 2 or 3 (depending on whether we have 12 or 18 participants) people who will not be driving their own car. Immediately we have to think about some compromises - who's car will we use, what setup will we choose. There is no way we can each have our own car set up to our own liking unless we compromise some of the rules we race under.

Instead of having to start and finish with the same car, we could allow each person to race their own car. Cars could be changed while in pits refueling. All cars a team is using would need to be presented for scrutineering. This however raises the issue of reliability.

With potentially 18 cars involved we could not expect John to be the repair man. Each person/team would need to take responsibility for their own cars. If there is not someone in a team that can repair their car, then they would need at least one car to make it through to the end. In this scenario you are pack to the situation of having cars shared between multiple drivers. Teams would not just be a mixture of drivers of different strengths, but also different cars. There are a lot off other complexities which would surround this type of arrangement, for example, what happens if a car breaks down between pit stops?

So, we either develop a complex format which introduces a lot more variables and multiplies the potential difficulties, or we agree to compromise for this event around the cars and setup we use.

For me, I love to develop my own car, even though at times I am off the pace, but for this type of event I am happy to drive a 'team'. It has the advantage of letting me feel how other cars perform compared to mine. At some future stage it might be worth considering running some longer races where the difference in our setups makes a difference, not just drivers ability - but that's for another discussion.

The only suggestion I would make is that each team has two cars. One prepared by John and starts the race. One could be prepared by a team member and on the same ID. The latter could be used in the rare possibility that for some reason the car prepared by John is broken. The second car would then be run to the end thus potentially reducing the need for any repairs to be done during the race.

So depending on final date, I'm in and will run in a team car

That is a great idea Bruce and would definately be happy to run with that. And in saying this too i would also be happy to run a class enduro later in the year where drivers setup their own cars, as i love the fact that guys have a go at it, but i hope i dont put guys noses out of joint when offering my sevices to help make their cars better handle but the only reason for this is i feel bad that i get my cars goin pretty good and someone else is not up the front just because of car handling and that makes me feel like they might not enjoy their racing as much that is the only reason why i offer to setup cars for guys, but if i know they like to setup their own cars and are quite happy where its is running it does make me feel much more happy that they are still enjoying it anyway. Cheers for all the input so far from all the guys

John

HI Guys

I Like the idea of having this class as a enduro. I have competed in quite a few in different classes, and the big thing that i found is that if the cars are close to being equal in performance, then you stand a chance of having a great night of close racing both in times and fun.I agree with Trent on the subject,of john preparing the cars for the event as this will give everyone a equal chance of having fun. By all means if you have a car that you have done yourself well this could be use if the main car fails. So looking at the interest in this event, i would like to suggest that we discuss it on Friday night at John's before we race.

Wow,
There has been some really good points put forward, some i agree with others not so much but it is still great to see people throwing out some new ideas or different perspectives and not just shooting people down. In the end it is your call John and i will be happy with whichever way you choose.

I like the 2 car approach which i believe will aid in reducing the need for John to do consistent repairs if they arise. (another person to help with repairs would be good too)

I have no problem with you and your dad racing but i would also suggest to be at the next racemeet
as we are racing Nascars that nite and you will probably want to get used to the track before participating in an enduro. We have cars and controllers to loan on all racenights i have 2 nascars i can loan you guys. And on the enduro night you wont need a car or controller just turn up
